In 1991, a small home-made fanzine made by three young girls, hit the streets of Chicago. Eye II Eye Newsletter focused on local Chicago bands, featuring every style of music from glam rock to death metal, and everything in-between. In the beginning only a couple of hundred issues were hitting the streets each month. But interest grew and the word got out, (along with a lot more issues!) and soon, Eye II Eye Newsletter had become the biggest and most well know local fanzine in Chicago. Not to be compared to local music publications such as The Chicago Rocker or Windy City Rocks, Eye II Eye Newsletter was strickly made “for the fans, by the fans” and the main difference was that the publication was just that - a fanzine. Nothing fancy. Nothing expensive. Ads for local clubs and promotional dates for local bands were posted free of charge. The price of a subscription? Four first class stamps a month sent to the main office got the newsletter delivered to your front door every month. The newsletter was above all, a fans outlook at the Chicago local music scene. And it was exactly what the fans wanted.
Eye II Eye Newsletter quickly became a favorite among local club goers. Having
worked with some of the finest talent in the city: Sweet Sybil, Insania, Nikki Foxx, Sgt.
Roxx, Demented Ted, The Answer, Haven, Theater, Energy Vampires... the list goes on
and on, new issues were quickly picked up. The newsletter was nominated for a Chicago
Rocker Award and was even named by Teen Magazine as Top Local Fanzine of the Year.
In 1995 the local music publication The Chicago Rocker even invited the founder of Eye
II Eye Newsletter, Renee Husk, to create a monthly column, called Eye II Eye, to be
included in their larger publication each month.
By 1996 the Eye II Eye name was very well known throughout the Chicago music area. Husk decided to then turn to the management side of the business, and Eye II Eye Entertainment was formed. A promotional backing for some of the smaller, less known local acts - a management base for some of the larger, well known bands. Eye II Eye has promoted and booked shows for many of the city’s best known clubs: The Gateway Theater, The Vic Theater, The River, The Thirsty Whale, Sidetracked, The Cubby Bear, House of Blues, etc. And have also worked with top national acts as L.A. Guns, Vince Neil, D.R.I., Dangerous Toys, Enuff Z'Nuff, Tuff, Collective Soul and others. They have also been the main force behind the business end, at one time or another, to such well known local bands as: Beggars Day, Kamikaze Butterfly, Epithath, Hollow, Dimestore Junkies, Black Sun and most recently Khaos Theory.
